The First Congregational Church in Norwood recently commissioned four new Stephen
Ministers at a special worship service held on January 5, 2020. The Stephen Ministers are lay members of the
congregation who have completed a 4-month training program (50 hours of class time) focusing on providing
one-on-one confidential, Christ-centered caring ministry to people in crisis or
to those struggling with grief, divorce, job loss, or chronic or terminal illness.
Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour. Men are matched with men; women with women.
Initially, Stephen Ministers at the First Congregational Church will provide care for members of their church, but the long-term goal of the Stephen Ministry program is to provide outreach care for the Norwood community as a whole.
